Astronomy Club Magazine writeup 2018

Started in 2013 and now into our fifth year, we have established an active programme in promoting interest in the mysterious universe to our club members. The club provides four types of activities: Weekly meetings, Competitions, Outreach and Learning Journeys. Astronomy Club meetings are held weekly on Fridays from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. During the meetings, students prepare and present Astronomy programmes for their peers. The theory lessons are complemented with skills training and assessment at the end of the lessons. Besides using telescopes, members are trained on using Radio fox-hunting equipment and water rocket launchers. In 2018, the Astronomy Club members participated in the Nanyang Polytechnic Astronomy Quiz, the Raffles-Hwa Chong Astrigue Competition and the NUS-NTU Astrochallenge. We made progress as members are able to qualify for the finals this year, demonstrating a keen interest and competency in these competitions. Providing Astronomy Outreach is a meaningful programme to develop our students' leadership skills. 2018 has been another groundbreaking year for our members as we had the opportunity to conduct Astronomy sessions for SST Falcon Scouts and Zhangde Primary School Girls' Brigade. Besides that, we have also provided support for public outreach programmes during two lunar eclipses on 26 January and 28 July 2018 respectively. The Astronomy Club had organised two field trips this year to Barelang and Taiwan to provide opportunities for our students explore the less-polluted night sky. We also went on a learning journeys to Changi Airport to learn about the Meteorological Service and National Junior College to attend a talk by Professor Lisa Harvey Smith on Radioastronomy. Through these activiities, we hope that our students would not only gain in knowledge and skiils, but also in character and leadership.
